Before Rolling Stone turned into an irrelevant pile of commercial crap over 40 years ago, it was at the vanguard of the "Underground Press" - a crude newspaper devoted to the counterculture, drugs, music, uncensored political and sexual expression and all things Hippie. Fortunately, being Canadian, the Georgia Straight of Vancouver carried on the anarchistic torch for a few years after RS gave it up, giving us a ribald and unfettered underground newspaper sold in the British Columbia area. From r-rated underground comics (the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (FFFB) by Gilbert Shelton, Fat Freddie's Cat, and others) to interviews with counterculture icons, this paper is a window on a long-gone world of late 1960s ideals (it started around the same time as RS in 1967). This is a selection of 14 issues from 1973-74 and although not a contiguous run it gives a great look at the era. Included are the following issues:
VOL.7 (1973) - June 14-21 (no issue number, Allen Ginsberg); #306 Aug. 16-23 (Flo & Eddie concert ad, Craig Herb and the Wife comic, FFFB comic); #307 Aug. 23-30 (FFFB, Neil Young, Elton concert ad); #310 Sep. 13-20 (Bruce Lee, Ecohawks Brent Boates comic); #314 Oct. 12-19 (FFFB, tinted paper stock); #315 Oct. 18-25 (Cluck Wilverton comic, stain/tear/yellowing); #319 Nov. 15-22 (Wavy Gravy, FFFB, Leon Russell concert ad); #321 Nov. 29-Dec. 6 (FFFB, Willie Dixon/J.L. Hooker concert ad); #324 Dec. 20-Jan. 3, 1974 (Craig Xmas colour comic, Quicksilver concert ad)
VOL. 8 1974 -#325 (FFFB, Pigpen eulogies); #328 Jan. 24-31 (Harold Hedd comic); #329 Jan. 31-Feb. 7 (FFFB, Nancy Kotex Yossarian comic, Craig Vancouver colour comic spread, ELP concert ad); #331 Feb. 14-21 (Craig comic, G. Shelton Fat Freddy's Cat comic); No number May 2-9 (Allen Ginsberg Craig colour cover, ROBERT CRUMB COMIC, Leslie comics, Ginsberg). For the most part all are in excellent condition with only a bit of raggedness to the lower edges, a bit of yellowing of the old newsprint stock, and a small tear or two on an issue or two. There are no losses, writing, labels, cut out sections, creases or folds and they are very well preserved considering their 40 years of existence. A great chance to own a piece of history. Since there isn't a complete run, we're selling these as a collection only. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. Expedited tracked and insured parcel shipping to the U.S. starts at $21 (other spots may vary, air is higher). Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. An unusual silver plated cigar table lighter circa 1880. This truly futuristic looking Victorian globular 3-1/2" tall smoking accessory stands on ball feet and it has two wick clamps for lighting the cigars. It worked like this: the central wick continually burned whilst the smoker would pull out one clamp which had a fluid-soaked small length of wick clamped in the tweezer. This was lit in the flame, carried to the cigar, and then extinguished and reinserted in its well to soak it for the next cigar. Each tweezer/clamp has a sliding collar to squeeze onto the wick, and this unusual item has the maker's mark for Hirons, Plante & Co. (c1878-1882) of Birmingham, England. This lighter is in very good condition with no bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than seven shallow dents on the body. This is the full kit with fittings for the ear, eye, various orifices and the odd cavity, including the head-mounted lamp as well. It includes the original 15 x 12" plush fitted case with almost the full array of original equipment. The pieces we can identify include: spreaders (yikes!), ear attachment, red bulb attachment, Vitrohm potential adjuster (looks like it screws into light sockets for power), 2 angled mirrors, printed envelope with spare bulbs, headpiece with plastic strap (the plastic has vitrified and a piece has broken off), tongue depressor in holder, angled mirror in holder (eyes or oral?), extension wall plug, stainless loops and probes in cylindrical case, 4 large blown glass extended bulbs, 2 steel brackets. There are about three empty fitted compartments from now missing items, but this set is mostly complete. The black paper covered case is in good shape with only some corner rubs, it is stamped DR. C. W. STREETS in gold, and this wonderful medical historical diagnostic artifact is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, dents, bends, corrosion, major losses, damage or repairs. All Items : Archives : Decorative Art : Ceramics : Chinese Export : Pre 1900 item #1211664 (stock #6948)
A genuine Chinese late 19th century oxblood glaze classic bulbous shape vase. This vase is 9-1/8" in height and features the lovely brownish red oxblood glaze over a greyish-white ceramic body. It has fairly thick glaze at the base, which shows some frit. It has allover crazing and the surface of the glaze has fine overall pinpoint pitting from firing as well. It is unmarked and it is in good condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than a small area on the upper rim where there is a dullness in the glaze and small shallow depression. (the rim glaze is mostly intact). The glaze at the bottom shows some chipping also, likely caused during removal from the kiln after firing. Some of these pieces were of lesser quality, as there was pressure to produce them to meet the export demand, even in the 19th century. Subsequently, there was less care in their production than in the finer quality 18th century pieces. That is not true of all 19th and early 20th century Chinese oxblood ware, but some pieces like this show that they were produced more quickly and with a little less care than earlier pieces produced for the wealthier in China and elsewhere. Condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have signs of use. Expedited tracked and insured parcel shipping to the U.S. starts at $36 (other spots may vary, air is higher). Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT accept PayPal, only VISA and MASTERCARD.

This is a stunning c1900 mahogany and brass 1/2 and 1/4 glass plate camera which includes the original tripod, extra plates, plate holders, photographer's guide and other items. It retains the original leather carrying handle (this camera collapses for easy transport). It retains the original black leather bellows which remain in excellent shape (shown slack in one of the pictures - it extends fully and cleanly as expected) and all screws and mounts are intact and fully functional. Included is a 1911 Wellcome Photographic Exposure Record from the London, Ontario, Canada owner which has a later notation describing the lens as an F.H. Dowblet with a T-P shutter; this booklet also has an exposure calculation wheel as well as shutter, picture and other information. Also included are three mahogany and metal slide McKenzie Wishart film and plate holders allowing 6 further plates to be exposed (numbered with ivory discs from 1-6). The lens assembly has the original wrapped pull cord and the ivory discs showing the speed settings and another with the T-P identification information (TIME & INST. PATENT THORNTON-PICKARD). Also included in this suite is a cardstock case with five unexposed glass 1/4 plates (2 broken, 3 intact), three black patinated metal double sided (#1-6) 1/4 plate carriers in the original cloth wrapped carry case, an extra loose metal mounted plate from one of the carriers, some old newspaper scraps that wrapped some of the plates, four exposed 1/2 plates (uniformed guard, couple in front of house in London, Ontario, three landscapes with a newspaper clipping showing the bridge over a river which is one of the views on the plates) plus a 1/4 plate showing a school soccer player. We have reversed the image with our photo software so you can see the couple (available in our email picture files). Conditon on this intact and rare package is exemplary - some minor corner bashes to the wood of the lens housing and some very minor signs of gentle use and some fraying and loss to the shutter cord and minor wear to the carrying handle, but overall it is astounding this setup has remained intact and in such archive-worthy condition. A pair of stunning hand painted and gilt metal mounted 19th century Sevres style plant pots or jardinieres. This pair consists of two French porcelain 9-1/2" diameter and 7-3/4" tall planters with white glazed interiors and painted scenes on the exterior. The scenes include floral panels and 18th century couples on a deep turquoise blue ground with hand gilding. Each pot is mounted on a footed gilt brass stand, which has two side straps with lion heads with mouth tassels. Each strap is mounted to a top beaded collar anchoring the pot to the fittings. They have a blue painted Sevres style mark and the uprights are stamped AH on the interior. Condition is reasonable considering their age, with the following issues: there is minor gilding loss, one metal arm/upright has been broken in three pieces and it has been crudely soldered and re-broken, some of the screws are replacements and one segment of one support column has been refastened on a different part of the upper collar on one pot. One pot and fittings is intact, the other needs some professional brazing and refitting of the fractured column. The pots themselves are in excellent condition with no crazing, chips, cracks or repairs other than some minor wear to the gilding and some dulling of the interior bottom glaze from use in the past. We've seen the supports offered online on occasion (rescued from broken examples) so it may be possible to replace the damaged one. This handsome matching pair is in as-described condition as stated above. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. A rare late Victorian Page or Plato clock, fully hallmarked for London, England 1901. This mechanical marvel features celluloid leaves with handpainted numerals, the top dial for hours and the bottom for minutes. The mechanism flips each page over to tell the time, and it has a round case in sterling silver. Seen occasionally in brass and in lesser metals, silver is very rare and would have been extremely expensive in its day. It has bun feet, a handle and a cylinder of very thin glass for a window. It has retainers to keep the pages open and the winder and adjustment are on the bottom. It has the maker's mark for the Charles S Green & Co Ltd and it has had a professional case-off cleaning and adjusting, involving a complete piece-by-piece disassembly and reassembly. Other than the replacement of the original damaged celluloid page retainer with a hand-cut metal one and a crack and loss to the glass cylinder, this rare clock is in excellent working condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than those noted above. Please note that the cracked glass doesn't show from the front when the clock is displayed.
